What exactly do they do and what makes them different?
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide mimic peptide hormones found in the gut called Incretins, which stimulate insulin production after eating. The two main Incretins are Glucagon Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) and Glucose Dependent Insulinotropic Peptide (GIP).
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist. This means it mimics one of the incretins (GLP-1) and is responsible for increased insulin production, improved gut motility and it suppresses your appetite.
Tirzepatide is a dual agonist and mimics both GLP-1 and GIP Incretins. It does everything Semglutide does, but also stimulates lipolysis (fat metabolism).
Both peptides have shown significant weight loss results in both phase 3 trials and in real world evidence, with Tirzepatide showing a greater % of overall weight loss. Tirzepatide also tends to have less stomach discomfort and nausea that can sometimes be reported with semaglutide.
Who is a good candidate for these prescriptions?
